Poverty fuelling GVB crisis, Ramaphosa tells indaba

President Cyril Ramaphosa says poverty remains a driving force behind gender-based violence cases.

Ramaphosa was speaking during a dialogue on Tuesday with young men and boys, which forms part of the presidency's efforts to combat GBV.

"The impact of poverty on masculinity is quite negative, and in the end, yes, poverty has an overarching and a very negative impact on the status of men and through poverty, men express themselves in a number of negative ways."
He said violence against women and children is a crisis that will destroy the country if left unchallenged.
"It is a societal issue, and we need to be changing minds. We need to raise levels of consciousness. it is an ongoing challenge and struggle.
"It may not happen overnight, but we have great principles and policies that will be able to get this to be overall accepted all round. We must never stop. We must never tire of raising that level of consciousness."
