A factory worker is in a serious condition in hospital following a tragic crash that claimed the life of his co-worker in Westmead, west of Durban.

A heavy-duty tow truck hauling a timber truck laden with timber smashed through the property after careening down an embankment on Monte Carlo Road on Monday afternoon.

Emergency response teams say two men working inside the factory were trapped beneath the wrecked tow truck.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson says firefighters worked for hours to free the men.
"The eThekwini fire department used hydraulic equipment and airbags to raise the truck enough to cut the two patients free. Unfortunately, one male, believed to be in his 20s, sustained major injuries. There was nothing paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased at the scene."
The truck driver, who is in his 30s, was seriously hurt. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
