Mchunu: Effective policing to top discussions at SAPS summit
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says finding ways to police the
country effectively, despite constraints, will be top of the agenda at a
policing summit underway in Gauteng.

"[There are] shortages in terms of police numbers to the population, budgetary constraints. And where there is high rate of crime and corruption, especially in the four biggest provinces, the overall test that we must pass is for the citizens of this country to stop somewhere and say, we feel safe."
Senzo Mchunu addressed officials at the summit that is taking place in Kempton Park under the theme: Efficiency in Action: Optimising South Africa’s Policing Potential
Mchunu has told delegates that the rise in gender-based violence and femicide cases remains one of their major concerns.
"We are equally concerned about the murder rate in our country, although statistics indicate that this is in the decline, but it is still at high level, but we are also worried about [the] easy availability of firearms, especially illegal firearms in our country. Drugs, we are working very hard to reduce organized crime as this is the main contributor to crime levels."

The summit has gathered experts and practitioners from various departments to discuss critical issues and identify approaches that can improve the efficiency of policing.
SAPS officials from across the country, including KwaZulu-Natal's police chief, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, are attending.
The summit runs from Tuesday to Thursday.
